Schengen Visa Application

Schengen Visa Application Process

This is a general guide for Schengen Visa applications. For more detailed information, consult the embassy or consulate of the primary destination country.

What is a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen Visa allows non-EU nationals to enter and stay in the Schengen Area for short, temporary visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This visa facilitates travel across 27 European countries in the Schengen Zone under a single permit.

Types of Schengen Visas

  1. Single-Entry Visa – Allows a single entry into the Schengen Area.
  2. Multiple-Entry Visa – Allows multiple entries for the duration of the visa’s validity.
  3. Airport Transit Visa – Permits connection through the international transit area of a Schengen airport during stopovers without exiting the transit area.

Duration of Stay

The maximum allowable stay is calculated using the Short-Stay Visa Calculator, which helps applicants determine their remaining days in the Schengen Area based on prior travel. A guide is available to assist with its use.

Who Needs a Schengen Visa?

Certain non-EU nationals are required to hold a short-stay visa to travel within the Schengen Area. A list of these countries and exceptions is available on the EU’s official website. Specific travellers, such as diplomats or students on organized school trips, may qualify for exemptions.

Airport Transit Visa Requirements

For non-EU nationals connecting through a Schengen airport, an airport transit visa may be necessary to remain in the airport’s international transit area. There are exemptions under specific circumstances as outlined in Article 3(5) of the Visa Code.

Where to Apply

You must submit your Schengen Visa application to the consulate of the country you intend to visit.

  • Multiple Destinations: If visiting multiple countries, apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the longest duration.
  • Equal Stay in Several Countries: Apply at the consulate of the first Schengen country you plan to enter.

As a general rule, applications must be lodged with the consulate responsible for your area of legal residence.

When to Apply

  • Submit your application at least 15 days before travel and no earlier than 6 months in advance.
  • In some cases, consulates may require an appointment to lodge the application, so it is advisable to check well ahead of your planned travel.

Required Documentation

Applicants should ensure the following documentation is complete and accurate:

  • Valid Passport: Expiry date must be at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area.
  • Visa Application Form: A completed and signed application form.
  • ICAO-Standard Photo: A recent photograph meeting international standards.
  • Medical Insurance: Covering emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation, valid throughout the Schengen Area.
  • Supporting Documents: Evidence of purpose of travel, financial resources, accommodation, and intent to return to the home country.
  • Biometric Data: Fingerprints are collected for visa applications, with specific exemptions applying.
  • Additional Documents: Consulates may request further documentation depending on the nature and purpose of travel.

Visa Fees

  • €90 for Adults
  • €45 for Children (ages 6–12)
  • €35 for Applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus
  • €67.50 for Applicants from Cabo Verde

Visa fees may vary if you apply through service centers that handle applications on behalf of consulates. Specific categories of applicants may qualify for a fee waiver.

Processing Time

Processing time generally takes 15 days from submission. For complex cases requiring further review, processing may extend up to 45 days. Family members of EU or EEA citizens may be eligible for a streamlined, expedited process under the Free Movement Directive.
